A barcode made here is not a registered GS1 number. To sell in shops you need your own GS1 company prefix, issued by GS1.

What the numbers mean

EAN-13
The 13-digit product number printed on most packaged goods worldwide.
UPC-A
The 12-digit product number used in the US and Canada. A UPC-A is the same as an EAN-13 with a 0 in front.
EAN-8
A short 8-digit number for packages too small for 13 digits.
GTIN
The common name for all of these. EAN-8, UPC-A, EAN-13 and GTIN-14 are GTINs. GTIN-14 numbers a carton or case that holds several of the same product, and is printed as an ITF-14 barcode.
Check digit
The last digit, worked out from the others. A scanner uses it to tell a good read from a misread.
Code 128
Not a product number. It draws any text, so it suits order numbers, shelf and box labels, and anything only you read.

Questions

Is this barcode generator free?

Yes. There is no account, no e-mail to give and no watermark. The barcodes are made in your browser, so the numbers you type are not sent to us.

Is this a real GS1 number?

No. The tool draws the number you give it; it does not issue numbers. A registered number is made from a GS1 company prefix, which you get from GS1 at gs1.org. Anyone can draw a barcode that looks right, which is why some marketplaces check that a number really belongs to you.

Which barcode do I need for shops and Amazon?

In the US and Canada shops have long asked for UPC-A, elsewhere for EAN-13, and most modern scanners read both. Amazon and most marketplaces ask for a GTIN, which means an EAN or a UPC, and many want it registered to you with GS1. Use GTIN-14 for cartons that hold several units. Each shop and marketplace sets its own rules, so check theirs before you print.

SVG or PNG?

SVG is made of lines, so it stays sharp at any size: take it for print, packaging and labels. PNG is a picture at one size: fine for a web page, a document or an app that does not take SVG. If you are not sure, take SVG.

Why does the check digit matter?

A scanner uses the last digit to catch a misread. If it does not fit the other digits, the number is not a valid EAN, UPC or GTIN, and scanners and marketplaces can refuse it. This tool tells you what the digit should be and offers to add it when you press the button. It never changes a number on its own.
