What a SKU is and how to design one
A SKU is the short code you give each product you sell, so that you, your team, your warehouse and every sales channel mean the same item. A barcode can carry it, but the SKU is yours.
A good SKU can be read by a person: brand, product type, color, size. NRD-TBL-OAK-M is a Nord table in oak, medium. Keep the parts in the same order every time, from the widest to the narrowest.
Keep it short. Use capital letters, digits and one separator such as a hyphen. Leave out spaces, accents and characters like # or /, because shops, scanners and spreadsheets treat them differently. Do not pack everything in: a code that holds ten facts is hard to read and breaks the day one of them changes. Leave out what changes, such as price or supplier.
End with a running number when two products can share every other part. Never reuse a code, even for a product you stopped selling.
Questions
Is the SKU generator free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, and nobody asks for your email before you get a file.
Does my product list leave my computer?
No. The codes are made in your browser. Your list and your codes are not sent to Keelvy or to anyone else, and nothing is stored: close the tab and they are gone.
Can I use my own codes for brands and colors?
Yes. Each part has a list of values and codes that you can type or paste from a spreadsheet. When a value has no code, the tool can make one from its letters. Ukrainian and other Cyrillic names are written in Latin letters.
What happens when two products get the same code?
The tool lists every repeated code with its rows and changes nothing by itself. Make unique adds a number to the repeats and marks each row it changed.
Can I come back to my lists another day?
